The thing with a “main character”, is that the reader see the story/world from that characters point of view - we can often read the characters thoughts and feelings more than other characters in the story. You can also use the perspective to increase this “effect”.

You can use the eye-level to display the world seen from the main character. Look at the two pictures above, the characters have the same size on both pictures - the only difference I’ve made is to switch eye-level. And by just doing this, we switch between the adult and the kids point of view - even though they both look at the same thing.

So, when you are doing a perspective, FIRST decide the eye-level and after that start placing out all those annoying guidelines.

“How do I draw? I know some people just start by playing with different shapes and combinations and only go to look for poses and attitudes afterwards. It’s probably a good method. I don’t know. In any case it isn’t mine. I cannot help going directly to the attitude, to the character’s personality. The problem with this way of doing the things is that you may fall in love with a pose, with a single drawing and think that the character is good because he works in that concrete attitude. And you might be perfectly wrong. To avoid this mistake, once I’ve found a good drawing with a nice pose that expresses what I consider could be the character’s personality, I draw the same character in very different poses, with different expressions and attitudes -which could match the character as well- just to see if they work too. Or I try to draw the same pose and attitude with different shapes, because it might work better with them. I simply try a lot of different possibilities before I choose the final version of the character.”

I’m working towards becoming a concept artist (unfortunately not in art school yet) and am especially interested in character design. Any tips on what sort of practice or what sort thinking I should be doing to improve my designs? Thanks!”

Firstly, you will need to learn the hard lesson that nobody wants A Character Designer. There’s no such job (that I am aware of). I really, truly wish there was. Not that I don’t enjoy designing other things, and not that I doubt you enjoy designing other things too! You didn’t even say that you wanted to be a “character designer” (which is something I hear people say occasionally) which is good, I just feel like I ought to warn people on this blog in general, heh.

On a related note, there IS such a thing as a Character Artist, however that title refers to someone who models/textures/rigs a character in 3D. A character designed by someone else. I haven’t come across anyone who both designs and models characters as their job.

But you didn’t ask about that, and this is becoming a tangent.

The main thing to know about concept art is that it isn’t strictly about making pretty pictures. It’s about visual communication. Visual communication is the ability to clearly translate an amorphous artistic idea into a technical one by making “blueprints” in a universal language. It’s how different disciplines in game design talk to one another. It’s a surprisingly technical thing; when I got to school I got whiplash from having to change my mode of thinking.

So, knowing that as a concept artist you carry the toolbox necessary to help people convince others of their ideas and to convey your own, you need to be armed with certain skills that augment your own creativity:

Perspective.

Lighting.

Rendering.

A special fourth skill I’ll get into in a bit.

These things come together and enable you to “draw what you mean.” “Drawing what you mean” is the ability to put on paper exactly what you want whatever it is to look like, because that is the resource the rest of the team has to evaluate and execute that design.

Unfortunately, no one else is in your brain with you, and no one else shares your particular design sense and knowledge. What you think is self-evident is not self-evident to everyone, down to the supposedly simplest things—if you draw rivets, you better specify that they are rivets, or else someone might model screw heads. If your perspective is wrong or your rendering is lumpy, someone will have to guess what you intended, and you REALLY want to avoid people guessing (unless you’re working with someone you know and who is familiar with your work and aesthetic and you trust them to know what you mean).

I’ve made paper models, gotten out of my chair (oh no!) and acted, and even drawn on myself in sharpie to communicate things to people. It might be ridiculous but game development is basically a lot of making sure a LOT of people with completely different skillsets and priorities are all on the same page.

The last most important skill in your toolbox is SPEED. This particular skill evades me from time to time, but it is insanely important to be able to do all of the above and FAST. Learn all of your preferred art programs like the back of your hand, use keyboard shortcuts, make Photoshop actions, get an arsenal of brushes that look like rocks and leaves and whatever, learn how to effectively kitbash photos, everything you can think of to put an image on the canvas efficiently. It helps to have rock solid art foundational skills, so pay attention in Color Theory :P

TL;DR, concept artists are sort of like engineers that paint pretty pictures. At the art school I went to, if you graduate from the concept art track, they give you a Bachelor of Science. That about sums it up.

Man, this is exactly the kind of stuff I’m talking about when I mention value range! The Witch Doctor before and after page is a really good example of the importance of starting with a dark value and working up. The “before” is a pretty common result of working light to dark, or starting with a value that is too close to the middle of the value range. Everything looks kind of washed out, even when working with saturated colors, and lacks volume.

This is an amazing reference overall, gonna pour over the full PDF when I have a minute.

This is a great resource; we took a long hard look at this before we developed our 3D art style at work. Very smart, very well laid out. A really crucial resource to anyone who needs to worry about readability at a distance.
